Recipe Preparation Details

Ingredients

Serves 4

    • ½ teaspoon yeast
    • ½ teaspoon sugar for fermenting yeast
    • 2 tablespoon lukewarm water for fermenting yeast
    • 1½ cups all purpose flour
    • 2 tablespoon sugar
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 1 cup milk, room temperature
    • ¼ teaspoon vanilla essence
    • ¼ cup powdered sugar
    • 1 ½ cup vegetable oil

Prepare it

1First in a small bowl, to ferment yeast, mix together, yeast, ½ teaspoon sugar and lukewarm water. Keep it aside for 5 minutes to ferment.

2 Meanwhile in a mixing bowl sift together, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

3Now add add milk to the flour mix and mix well until it is a smooth batter and there are no lumps. Then add vanilla essence and fermented yeast and mix well.

4Keep the batter to ferment for 20 minutes.

5Heat oil in a heavy bottom pan at 365 degrees F to 370 degrees F. You can check that the the oil is hot by immersing the back side of wooden spoon. If it starts sizzling then the oil is ready.

6Pour the batter in a sauce bottle with wide mouth or in a funnel. Drop the batter into hot oil, by first making a large circle and then going crisis-cross inside the circle, in a web like fashion until you fill the circle.

7Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until it is golden brown and then flip it over. Cook again until it is golden brown and then remove from the oil. Put it on a plate with a paper towel to let any excess oil drain out.

8Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve hot.

Tip

The measurements in the above recipe needs to be exact to give the right texture and taste to the funnel cake. So follow the correct measurements as in the recipe You can use a zip lock bag instead of a sauce bottle, by pouring the batter into the bag, snipping off a small corner of it, and squeezing the batter into the oil. You can also top the funnel cake with whipped cream or strawberry sauce to give a different flavor to it.

I added a little more milk. Mine was a little too thick to pour into the correct messy funnel cake shape.
