Just a pinch of curry Powder can impart a magical taste to your dishes. The name curry powder originated from the word curry. Curry in India is nothing but a spiced gravy or sauce. This gravy/sauce can be made with many different bases. It could be a thick tomato based, onion and ginger-garlic based or coconut based gravy. Once the gravy/sauce is ready, you can add any ingredient like poultry product, meat or sea food. You can also put vegetables, lentils or tinned beans.
Since Indian food is rich with spices, most Indian dishes have many different kinds of herbs and spices to add to the taste flavor of the dish. Some spices are even used for medicinal benefits. Like the turmeric powder which is known for its antiseptic qualities. Each dish that is made in India has a unique taste, flavor, texture and color to it. To get that, each dish has its own unique spice blend to it. Depending on the region, this spice blend may vary a little bit. But the basic blend to get the typical taste is almost the same. This spice blend is nothing by the “Curry Powder”.
“Curry Powder as it is known today” is a little misunderstood. There is no single, standardized version to the Curry Powder. It is a blend of spices of a broadly varying composition. Curry Powder actually became popular in the 19th but more so in the 20th century as there was an increased line of import of spices into the western countries.
As more and more people became aware of Indian food and realized the importance of spices in their food, they started reaching out to these spice blends called “Curry Powder’. You can make a spice blend that suits your taste and call it a Curry Powder. This spice blend can be reused in every dish that you make, or if you are fond of cooking then you can make a “Curry powder” blend for each dish and call it your very own signature dish.
You come across the curry powder from different companies in the grocery stores. Try looking at the ingredients at the back of the product, you will find that every different company’s Curry Powder will have a different spice blend in it. So that will confirm that Curry powder is more of a convenient name given to the spice blend. Now coming to making your own Curry Powder blend, if you like taste of Indian food then you can go for stronger spice bland. These spice blends in India are commonly known as “Garam Masala” and every Indian place has its own version of regional spice blend depending on there tastes and availability of ingredients.
